DESCRIPTION:The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center\, in collaboration with the US Fish and Wildlife Service\, is thrilled to host an invigorating hike through the picturesque Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge. Led by our expert guide\, Ray Segovia\, this hike promises stunning coastal views and a deep dive into the conservation efforts that have preserved these beautiful dunes. \nHike Highlights: \n\nRoute: From the refuge entrance to the Enos Memorial statue\nDuration: Approximately 2.5 hours round-trip\nElevation Gain: 300 ft\nDistance:  Moderate hike with some elevation\n\nWhat to Bring: \n– Dress in layers\n– Water and snacks\n– Long pants and closed-toe shoes (to protect against coastal dune scrub\, poison oak\, and ticks) \nImportant Notes: \nRegistration: Spaces are limited; please register early to secure your spot.\nParking: Limited parking available; please follow directions provided below and park along the USFWS access road.\nRestrictions: No pets\, smoking\, or alcohol allowed on the refuge or in the parking area. Pets cannot be left in cars. \nHazards: Because this area is a wildlife refuge\, this is the home of many critters\, including rattlesnakes! For your safety\, we recommend wearing sturdy closed-toed shoes and long pants. \nDirections: \nFrom the North: take Hwy 101 south from San Luis Obispo. Turn right (west) at Willow Road off-ramp (Exit 180). Proceed west on Willow Road for 4.3 miles to Highway 1. Turn left (south) on Highway 1 and continue for 2.7 miles to Oso Flaco Lake Road. Turn right (west) on Oso Flaco Lake Road and proceed for 2.5 miles to Beigle Road. Look for a 6’ tall wire mesh fence and steel gate. \nFrom the South: Take Hwy 101 north to Santa Maria. Exit at Main Street toward Guadalupe. Turn right onto Highway 1 and head north to Oso Flaco Lake Road (about 3 miles north of Guadalupe). Turn left onto Oso Flaco Lake Road and proceed 2.5 miles to Beigle Road (on left). \nParking Instructions: \n– Meet at the entrance of the USFWS fenced road for parking directions. The gate will open around 8:30 AM. Do not park on Oso Flaco Lake Road near the gate as it is hazardous. You can park along the USFWS access road. If you need to use a restroom\, the Oso Flaco Lake State Park lot is another ¾ miles west of Beigle Road. \nAdditional Information: \nThe Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes-Point Sal Coastal Area is California’s largest undisturbed coastal dune tract\, designated a National Natural Landmark in 1974. It supports five major plant communities and numerous rare\, threatened\, and endangered species. SUMMARY:Wildlife Flower Tour at the Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an adventure at Coreopsis Hill in the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes on Saturday\, April 6\, 2024\, sponsored by The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center and the US Fish and Wildlife Service\, led by Mark Skinner and Ray Segovia. Starting at 9:00 AM (please arrive between 8:45 and 9:00)\, this casual hike will lead us through the dunes to the hill’s peak\, with a 300 ft elevation gain. Expect a moderate 3-hour round-trip with abundant wildflowers! Dress in layers\, bring water\, snacks\, and your ‘Dune Mother’s Wildflower Guide’ by Dr. Malcolm McLeod. Long pants and closed shoes are recommended for coastal dune scrub habitat\, mindful of poison oak and ticks. For more info\, email admin@dunescenter.org. Rain cancels. Let’s explore nature together! \n \nParking: We will have people posted at the entrance of the USFWS fenced road to direct parking. The gate will be open around 8:30 am. Please do not park on Oso Flaco Lake Road near the gate as there is not much room and it could be hazardous. There is room to park along the USFWS access road. Restrooms are available at the Oso Flaco Lake State Park lot\, which is another ¾ miles west of Beigle Road at the end of Oso Flaco Lake Road (there are no restrooms along the hike route). Note: Pets\, smoking or tobacco products\, or alcohol are not allowed on the Refuge\, including the parking area\, or other State Parks and Private properties accessed during the hike.
