SUMMARY:Oso Flaco Lake Trail Hike
DESCRIPTION:Healthy People Healthy Trails: Oso Flaco Lake Trail Hike\nJoin us for a fun and refreshing in-person hike along the beautiful Oso Flaco Lake Trail! It’s a great way to get moving\, enjoy nature\, and meet new friends who love the outdoors. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking to explore\, this event is for you. \nMeet us at the Oso Flaco Lake Trailhead between 12:45 PM and 1:00 PM for check-in at our registration table and to sign our liability form. If you would like to park in the parking lot near the trailhead\, parking is $5.00; otherwise\, free parking is available outside of the lot. \nThe trail begins from the Oso Flaco Day Use Area and travels along an asphalt road roughly 0.25 miles to a bridge. The bridge\, which crosses over a portion of Oso Flaco Lake\, has slots in the rails designed to allow fishing. \nBeyond the bridge\, the trail continues for 0.5 mile along a coastal dune boardwalk and terminates at an ocean overlook. The surface is asphalt and wood. Sections of the boardwalk navigate over or through moving sand dunes that occasionally deposit sand on the boardwalk surface. \nThe trail is generally flat\, with slopes of less than 5% and intermittent sections between 5% and 10%. Along the bridge and boardwalk\, benches and educational panels invite visitors to rest and learn about the area’s native people\, animals\, and plants. \nAccessible picnicking\, parking\, and vault restrooms are available at the trailhead parking lot. An additional accessible vault restroom is available roughly 0.8 miles from the trailhead parking lot. SUMMARY:Summer Community Bird Hike at Oso Flaco Lake
DESCRIPTION:Don’t be intimidated by the distance of this hike.  If you only want to do a 1 or 2-mile hike\, or even just a 100-yard hike\, you shouldn’t be disappointed.  We’ll often be treated to numerous species singing while we gather in the parking lot to start our hike.  The “Willow Tunnel” is famous for warblers\, vireos\, and sparrows serenading visitors on their way to the Lake.  \nAt the Lake\, we’ll find that most of the ducks have headed north to their breeding grounds\, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see lots of cool birds.  Terns\, swallows\, grebes and wrens should be easy to spot on the Lake\, all sporting their beautiful breeding colors. \nOn the quick walk out to the ocean\, we’ll almost certainly see a California specialty\, the California Thrasher.  These long-billed relatives of mockingbirds can often be found posted up on top of bushes singing their territorial and complicated songs. \nThe Pacific Ocean is the wild card for these excursions.  Lately\, lots of loons in their stunning breeding plumage are being spotted near the coast on their migration north.  And there is always a chance we’ll spot whales. \nSo\, be at the parking lot at 8:00 a.m. and join our docent\, John Deacon\, for what is sure to be a fun and informative morning.  We’ve included a few pictures of the birds we may see on our hike.  See you there! \nWhat to Bring: \n\nComfortable walking shoes\nSun protection (hat\, sunscreen)\nReusable water bottle\nCamera or notebook\, if you’d like to record your observations!\n\nSpace may be limited—RSVP early to reserve your spot! \nMeet at Oso Flaco Lake Trailhead \n\nDonations to the Dunes Center are always appreciated\, supporting educational programming and conservation efforts.

SUMMARY:Coreopsis Hill Wildflower Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a rare guided hike to Coreopsis Hill\, a visually stunning and ecologically rich part of the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes\, accessible only with special permission through private property. Thanks to the generosity of the Mill’s Family Farm\, we’re excited to offer this unique experience. \nThe hike will be led by a local botanist\, who will share knowledge about the native plant life currently in bloom—including Giant Coreopsis\, Dune Wallflower\, and Crisp Dune Mint—alongside Dunes Center docent Ray Segovia\, who will offer stories and history about the region\, its people\, and the conservation efforts that helped protect it. \nCoreopsis Hill was a favorite site of Kathleen Goddard Jones\, known as The Defender of the Dunes. Her dedication helped preserve this landscape for public appreciation\, and her legacy lives on in the monument she placed on the hill in honor of the Enos Family\, early stewards of the land. \nPlease wear sturdy shoes\, dress in layers\, and bring plenty of water. This is a moderate hike with uneven terrain. \n
