Welcome to the Healthy People Healthy Trails Calendar of Events. Please check back with us each month to learn more about events in our community that promote an active lifestyle. Read each description carefully and visit the sponsors' website for more information. Most events are free, but some have a fee or request a donation. The level of difficulty for each event varies. Check with the event leader if the level of difficulty is not clearly stated or if you have questions about the event.

  • Bird Walk: Goleta Beach/Atascadero Estuary

    The Goleta Beach / Goleta Slough / Atascadero Creek area is one of the go-to birding hot spots in Goleta. The eBird hotspot for the area boasts 232 species.

  • Bird Walk: Ennisbrook Preserve

    Ennisbrook Openspace/preserve/trail, known to the locals as the “100-acre wood,” is located along San Ysidro Creek between East Valley Road to the north and San Leandro Lane to the south.

  • Friday Bird Walk | Rocky Nook Park

    Rocky Nook Park is a lovely oak woodland studded with tall sycamores trees. Mission creek runs along the eastern edge making this park a great riparian habitat where vagrants often are found.

    Toro Canyon Park is an oak woodland with chaparral foothills. Opportunities abound for a varied assortment of birds in this area.

  • Friday Bird Walk | Elwood Mesa Sperling Preserve

    With a size of 230 acres, the Ellwood Mesa Sperling Preserve is the largest publicly owned coastal preserve on the Santa Barbara South Coast.

    Elings park is a 250 acre private non-profit park open to the public. Known mostly for it’s athletic, cultural and natural environs, it hosts varied habitat and trails that can lead one to many places that birds call home.

  • Friday Bird Walk – Santa Barbara Harbor

    Santa Barbara Harbor is a busy place during the day, but one can find many species of shorebirds, gulls, terns and water birds which take advantage of the quiet hours of the early morning.

  • Friday Bird Walk – San Marcos Foothill Preserve

    San Marcos Foothills Preserve is an open space encompassing 200 acres. It provides habitat for Roadrunners, White-tailed Kites, American Kestrels and several species of Hawks. It is also home to many grassland and chaparral bird species.

  • Friday Bird Walk – Andree Clark Bird Refuge

    The Andree Clark Bird Refuge is a 42-acre open space which includes a 29-acre brackish lake and wetlands. This is one of Santa Barbara’s birding hot spots which includes three platforms for wildlife observations.

    The North Campus Open Space is a great addition to Santa Barbara’s natural heritage which makes our community so special. It will be preserved for the enjoyment of the local community in perpetuity.
