SUMMARY:Arroyo Hondo Preserve - Nature Hike
DESCRIPTION:Free docent-led nature hikes are offered at 10:00 am on Sundays of open weekends. Visitors can also hike on their own on these days. Hikes are free of charge; however\, donations to help support Arroyo Hondo Preserve and the work of the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County are gratefully accepted. Everyone is welcome to visit the Preserve to hike\, picnic\, paint\, volunteer\, or research\, but advance reservations are required. \nOnline reservations can be made here: https://www.sblandtrust.org/arroyo-hondo-preserve-reservations/ \nDue to the sensitivity of the resources in the canyon\, dogs\, mountain bikes\, horses\, hunting\, fishing\, and campfires are not allowed. \n\nDirections to the Preserve: Traveling northbound on the U.S. Highway 101: The Preserve is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Santa Barbara. Approximately 4 miles past Refugio State Beach\, you will see a blue “Rest Area in 7 miles” sign followed closely by a yellow warning sign about falling rocks. The entrance to Arroyo Hondo is in 1/2 mile and will be visible on the right at the bottom of the hill. Make a right-hand turn into the driveway. Come down the driveway\, cross the bridge on the right and park near the barn.

SUMMARY:Our Great Grasslands at San Marcos Foothills Preserve!
DESCRIPTION:Join The Land Trust on Saturday\, March 22nd\, 2025\, from 10 am – 12:30 pm for a morning hike all about our native grasslands! The San Marcos Foothills Park and Preserve is located in the foothills between Santa Barbara and Goleta\, just east of San Marcos Pass Road (Hwy 154). Encompassing 210 acres\, the Preserve’s rolling grasslands\, oak ravines\, and seasonal watercourses provide important habitat for a variety of plant and wildlife species. We’ll be exploring the Preserve and learning about native versus nonnative grasslands and their dynamics. We’ll also look for early spring wildflowers and learn about some of the other native trees and shrubs that occur with the Preserve\, as time allows. \nWe’ll be walking up to 2-3 miles on rolling terrain. There is little shade\, so please bring sun protection\, if desired. No bathroom or water available onsite. Parking is free\, though limited to street parking. No dogs please. \nLand Trust Treks are a free\, public series of guided hikes for the community to explore scenic Santa Barbara County and to meet your local Land Trust.

SUMMARY:Arroyo Hondo Preserve - Nature Hike
DESCRIPTION:Free docent-led nature hikes are offered at 10:00 am on Saturdays of open weekends.

SUMMARY:California Poppy Day Hike
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Healthy People Healthy Trails Month\nWe’re excited to invite you to a special California Poppy Day Hike at Baron Ranch\, part of the Healthy People\, Healthy Trails initiative\, proudly sponsored by the Santa Barbara Trails Council. April is Healthy People\, Healthy Trails Month\, making it the perfect time to get outside\, enjoy nature\, and celebrate the beauty of California’s wildflowers. We’re hoping to spot some vibrant poppies along the way. \nThis scenic hike along the Arroyo Quemado Trail on the Gaviota Coast offers a mix of shaded woodlands\, chaparral-covered hills\, and sweeping coastal views. The itinerary is to hike two-thirds of the six-mile trail before returning to the trailhead. Participants can continue to Camino Cielo or turn back at any point. The core group will return after approximately four miles\, making it an 8-mile round-trip trek. \nDistance: 8 miles\nElevation Gain: 2\,000\nDifficulty: Moderate \n\nFirst mile: flat and easy\nMile 1 to 2.5: steep ascent\nMile 2.5 to 5: gentle 8-10% grade\, easygoing\nA small\, steep section\, but the rest of the trail is moderate and pleasant\nHikers can continue all the way out to Camino Cielo\, but the group leader will turn around near the 4-mile point.\n\nThe group will meet at the trailhead at 9:00 AM to ensure a prompt start. Please be punctual to respect everyone’s time. Please dress appropriately with hiking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes meant to get sweaty and possibly wet. We recommend 1-3L water bladder in a backpack depending upon trail difficulty so that your hands are free to cross water or scramble up/down rocks. \nNote: Rain or low attendance cancels the hike. \nGroup organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. By participating in this hike\, you agree to assume all risks and liability related to or resulting from this activity. Neither the group’s leaders nor any third party will be held liable for any injury\, loss\, or damage. Participation is based on an “at will” basis. \nWe’re lucky to have access to such stunning trails\, but keeping them safe and accessible takes effort. Consider supporting the Santa Barbara County Trails Council by becoming a member:\nJoin the SB Trails Council \nOr contribute to their trail fund:\nDonate to the Trail Fund \nYour support helps maintain and protect the beautiful outdoor spaces we love. Let’s hike\, enjoy the wildflowers\, and celebrate Healthy People\, Healthy Trails Month together.

SUMMARY:Fungi and Nature Foray at Arroyo Hondo Preserve!
DESCRIPTION:[SOLD OUT]\nJoin the Land Trust for a special guided foray at our beloved Arroyo Hondo Preserve on Sunday\, April 6th from 10 am to 1 pm! A foray is an activity that aims to educate participants about mushroom identification\, ecology\, and conservation. It’s important to note that foraying is different from foraging\, which is not permitted in the preserve. Learn about the amazing mycological network that exists just underneath our feet! We’ll have an interactive table set up with fungi samples and educational recources to show the group in case we miss our window due to weather. \nThis slow-paced walk will be roughly 2 miles on variable terrain and will include multiple stopping points. Some elevation gains are found throughout the trail. A few creek crossings will be required\, so hiking/tennis shoes are recommended. The weather is variable at the preserve\, so dressing in layers is recommended. Water\, parking\, and bathrooms are available at the preserve. Space is limited\, please sign up early to reserve your spot!

SUMMARY:Coreopsis Hill Wildflower Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a rare guided hike to Coreopsis Hill\, a visually stunning and ecologically rich part of the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes\, accessible only with special permission through private property. Thanks to the generosity of the Mill’s Family Farm\, we’re excited to offer this unique experience. \nThe hike will be led by a local botanist\, who will share knowledge about the native plant life currently in bloom—including Giant Coreopsis\, Dune Wallflower\, and Crisp Dune Mint—alongside Dunes Center docent Ray Segovia\, who will offer stories and history about the region\, its people\, and the conservation efforts that helped protect it. \nCoreopsis Hill was a favorite site of Kathleen Goddard Jones\, known as The Defender of the Dunes. Her dedication helped preserve this landscape for public appreciation\, and her legacy lives on in the monument she placed on the hill in honor of the Enos Family\, early stewards of the land. \nPlease wear sturdy shoes\, dress in layers\, and bring plenty of water. This is a moderate hike with uneven terrain. \n

SUMMARY:Botanic Garden - Elings Park Transformation Volunteer Project
DESCRIPTION:Santa Barbara Botanic Garden’s transformation project at Elings Park has removed thirsty\, invasive weeds and replaced them with California-native plants in a one-acre site on the Park’s south bluffs. With plants in the ground\, we’re watching and gathering data related to the abundance\, diversity\, and composition of plant and animal life using this area to better highlight the vital role native plants have in supporting healthy\, more resilient ecosystems. \n  \nAnd we need your help! \n  \nWe’re looking for volunteers interested in clearing weeds\, monitoring plant health\, and more. You’ll get your hands dirty planting native seedlings and creating a healthy and nutrient-rich environment for surrounding organisms. In addition to volunteering\, you can also come with us on our monthly Nature Walks. \n
