SUMMARY:Summer Community Bird Hike at Oso Flaco Lake
DESCRIPTION:Don’t be intimidated by the distance of this hike.  If you only want to do a 1 or 2-mile hike\, or even just a 100-yard hike\, you shouldn’t be disappointed.  We’ll often be treated to numerous species singing while we gather in the parking lot to start our hike.  The “Willow Tunnel” is famous for warblers\, vireos\, and sparrows serenading visitors on their way to the Lake.  \nAt the Lake\, we’ll find that most of the ducks have headed north to their breeding grounds\, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see lots of cool birds.  Terns\, swallows\, grebes and wrens should be easy to spot on the Lake\, all sporting their beautiful breeding colors. \nOn the quick walk out to the ocean\, we’ll almost certainly see a California specialty\, the California Thrasher.  These long-billed relatives of mockingbirds can often be found posted up on top of bushes singing their territorial and complicated songs. \nThe Pacific Ocean is the wild card for these excursions.  Lately\, lots of loons in their stunning breeding plumage are being spotted near the coast on their migration north.  And there is always a chance we’ll spot whales. \nSo\, be at the parking lot at 8:00 a.m. and join our docent\, John Deacon\, for what is sure to be a fun and informative morning.  We’ve included a few pictures of the birds we may see on our hike.  See you there! \nWhat to Bring: \n\nComfortable walking shoes\nSun protection (hat\, sunscreen)\nReusable water bottle\nCamera or notebook\, if you’d like to record your observations!\n\nSpace may be limited—RSVP early to reserve your spot! \nMeet at Oso Flaco Lake Trailhead \n\nDonations to the Dunes Center are always appreciated\, supporting educational programming and conservation efforts.

DESCRIPTION:We meet at the fountain in front of the mission at 9:30 AM in the morning for the morning hike. These hikes are on the front country trails behind Santa Barbara and Montecito. Dress appropriately with hiking boots\, comfortable clothes and bring at least a liter of water in your backpack or fanny pack. Bring sunscreen and bug repellent when necessary. \nThe morning hike leaves at 9:30 AM SHARP and we get back between 11:30 AM and noon. There are no dogs allowed on the hikes for safety concerns. SUMMARY:Arroyo Hondo Preserve - Nature Hike
DESCRIPTION:Free docent-led nature hikes are offered at 10:00 am on Sundays of open weekends. Visitors can also hike on their own on these days. Hikes are free of charge; however\, donations to help support Arroyo Hondo Preserve and the work of the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County are gratefully accepted. Everyone is welcome to visit the Preserve to hike\, picnic\, paint\, volunteer\, or research\, but advance reservations are required. \nOnline reservations can be made here: https://www.sblandtrust.org/arroyo-hondo-preserve-reservations/ \nDue to the sensitivity of the resources in the canyon\, dogs\, mountain bikes\, horses\, hunting\, fishing\, and campfires are not allowed. \n\nDirections to the Preserve: Traveling northbound on the U.S. Highway 101: The Preserve is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Santa Barbara. Approximately 4 miles past Refugio State Beach\, you will see a blue “Rest Area in 7 miles” sign followed closely by a yellow warning sign about falling rocks. The entrance to Arroyo Hondo is in 1/2 mile and will be visible on the right at the bottom of the hill. Make a right-hand turn into the driveway. Come down the driveway\, cross the bridge on the right and park near the barn.

SUMMARY:Trailpalooza 2025 Outdoor Festival
DESCRIPTION:The event is organized by Santa Maria Valley Open Space\, which aims to establish public trails in a natural setting for hiking\, cycling\, and horseback riding. These trails will allow passive and spontaneous access and serve the Santa Maria Valley and surrounding areas. \nAttendees can register for a 5\, 10\, or 15-mile trail run/walk or join the mountain bike race on a new short track that is full of jumps and technical features. \nFollowing the races\, attendees can indulge in local cuisine and entertainment\, all in support of Santa Maria Valley Open Space\, a nonprofit dependent on contributions for trail upkeep and expansion. \nSaturday Schedule \n\n9 a.m. to noonish – Trail Run/Walk (Choose your distance – 5\, 10 or 15 miles)\n11 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Mountain Bike Racing\n5 p.m. Close\n\nVisit www.smvos.org to find links for race registration. Entry is $20 per carload\, so attendees are encouraged to bring their family and friends. All youth under the age of 18 get into the festival for free. Participants who register to participate in either the run or bike race will not have to pay the $20 car fee. \nGetting There \nTrailpalooza will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Newlove Picnic Grounds at Solomon Hills\, near Orcutt. From Santa Maria\, take Highway 101 southbound 0.8 miles past the Clark Avenue exit to a small marker. DESCRIPTION:We meet at the fountain in front of the mission at 9:30 AM in the morning for the morning hike. These hikes are on the front country trails behind Santa Barbara and Montecito. Dress appropriately with hiking boots\, comfortable clothes and bring at least a liter of water in your backpack or fanny pack. Bring sunscreen and bug repellent when necessary. \nThe morning hike leaves at 9:30 AM SHARP and we get back between 11:30 AM and noon. There are no dogs allowed on the hikes for safety concerns. The hike is approximately 4 miles\, 2 miles up and 2 miles back. These hikes are appropriate for beginners in good health. We will carpool to the hike from the mission. Approximately 4 miles past Refugio State Beach\, you will see a blue “Rest Area in 7 miles” sign followed closely by a yellow warning sign about falling rocks. The entrance to Arroyo Hondo is in 1/2 mile and will be visible on the right at the bottom of the hill. Make a right-hand turn into the driveway. Come down the driveway\, cross the bridge on the right and park near the barn.

SUMMARY:Mother's Day: Carpinteria Bluffs Hike!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a very special Land Trust Trek on Sunday\, May 11\, 2025\, from 1pm – 4pm. Meeting at the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve parking lot\, we will walk 1.33 miles to the newest Land Trust acquisition: the Rincon Gateway. \nWe will be inspired by the collaborative efforts to save this beloved natural space from development. We will learn about the plants that are unique to this coastal habitat while we enjoy scenic views of mountains and ocean. All are welcome to participate! \nThis stroll is 2.6 miles round-trip\, with mostly even and exposed terrain. Water and bathroom facilities are available en route (at Viola Fields\, a mile from the meeting point). \nLand Trust Treks are a free\, public series of guided hikes for the community to explore scenic Santa Barbara County and to meet your local Land Trust. \nReservations required

SUMMARY:Cachuma Lake Recreation Area Nature Walks
DESCRIPTION:Reservations are required by calling (805) 688-4515. \nFirst come\, first served. Available for ages 3 and older. No pets\, please. Free to campers or free with the $10 park entrance fee for day-use visitors. There are also miles of trails for self-guided hikes within the park. Trail maps are available at the Main Gate. \nPrivate guided walks outside of these times are also available depending upon staff availability and have a $30 group fee.
