SUMMARY:Nature Hike With Assemblymember Gregg Hart
DESCRIPTION:We will meet in Carpinteria at the Tomol Interpretive Play Area on Carpinteria State Beach grounds to hike to the Carpinteria Harbor Seal Preserve and rookery. In addition to enjoying the stunning views of the ocean and the Channel Islands\, Assemblymember Hart will share highlights of his nascent experience as a member of several legislative committees\, including the recreation-focused Committee on Water\, Parks\, and Wildlife. \n \nOur route starts at the play area and follows Linden Avenue to the beach\, where we will take a boardwalk across dunes before turning inland and following a path around the State Park campgrounds and across the bluffs of Tar Pits Park. The trail is well-maintained and offers stunning views of the ocean and the surrounding mountains. After about 1.3 miles\, the trail reaches the Carpinteria Harbor Seal Preserve. The preserve is home to a large colony of harbor seals\, which can be seen sunbathing on the rocks or swimming in the ocean. The rookery is also home to a variety of other birds\, including pelicans\, gulls\, and cormorants. After exploring the preserve\, we will return to the Tomol Interpretive Play Area. \n \nDetails \n \n\nDate: April 23\, 2023\nTime: 10 am – 12 pm\nDistance: 2.8 miles round trip\nDifficulty: Easy\nTrailhead: Tomol Interpretive Play Area\, Carpinteria State Beach\, 389 Linden Ave\, Carpinteria\, CA (across from The Spot diner) \nParking: Use the parking lot for the train station on Linden Avenue.\nMaps: A trail map is available online.\nRestrooms: There are restrooms in Carpinteria State Beach.\nBring water\, sturdy shoes\, and sun protection.\n\n \nHistory Note \nIn 1769\, the Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola led an expedition through California and met the local Chumash people at the village of ‘Mishopshnow’ near what we now call Carpinteria Creek. Portola observed several of their plank “Tomol” canoes being constructed and incorporating the naturally-occurring asphalt (tar) into their design. As a result\, members of the Spanish expedition referred to the area as La Carpinteria or ‘The Carpenter Shop\,’ later to become Carpinteria.

Long pants and closed shoes are recommended as the habitat is coastal dune scrub and there is the possibility of poison oak and ticks in the natural dune areas. For more information\, email admin@dunescenter.org. Heavy rain cancels this trip. \n \nLimited reservations\, register early! \n \n \nDirections from the north: Take Hwy 101 south from San Luis Obispo. Turn right (west) at the new Willow Road off ramp (Exit 180). Proceed west on Willow Road for about 4.3 miles\, to Highway 1. Turn left (south) on Highway 1 and proceed for 2.7 miles\, to Oso Flaco Lake Road. Turn right (west) on Oso Flaco Lake Road. Proceed west on Oso Flaco Lake Road for 2.5 miles to Beigle Road. Look for a 6’ tall wire mesh fence and steel gate. \n \nDirections from the south: Take 101 north to Santa Maria and take the Main Street exit toward the town of Guadalupe. Turn right onto Highway 1 and head north to Oso Flaco Lake Road (about 3 miles north of Guadalupe)\, turn left onto Oso Flaco Lake Road and proceed 2.5 miles to Beigle Road (on left). \n \nParking: We will have people posted at the entrance of the USFWS fenced road to direct parking. The gate will be open around 8:30. Please do not park on Oso Flaco Lake Road near the gate as there is not much room and it could be hazardous. There is room to park along the USFWS access road. Restrooms are available at the Oso Flaco Lake State Park lot which is another ¾ miles west of Beigle Road at the end of Oso Flaco Lake Road (there are no restrooms along the hike route). Note: Pets\, smoking or tobacco products\, or alcohol are not allowed on the Refuge\, including the parking area\, or other State Parks and Private properties accessed during the hike. Pets may not be left in cars in the parking areas.

SUMMARY:APOC Hike | Carpinteria Bluffs
DESCRIPTION:American Pilgrims on the Camino Visit https://www.santabarbara-pilgrims.org/ for event details. All interested persons are welcome to participate in hikes and attend local meetings. Who Are the American Pilgrims on the Camino? The organization focuses on the 500 mile ancient pilgrimage trek in northern Spain from the French border at St Jean to Santiago\, the Cathedral city near the Atlantic coast of Spain. Some of the members are officially recorded Pilgrims who have hiked along one or more of the historical Camino Routes in Europe (The Way of St. James) and have received an official\, 1000 year old traditional plaque that certifies completion of the Camino de Santiago. The Santa Barbara Chapter of the APOC serves a social role to gather Pilgrims and interested persons and they help prepare and advise future pilgrims about hiking the Camino de Santiago. The organization encourages everyone to use and explore the historical California mission trail. Go out and walk to find your inner peace and enlightenment. \n

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the UCSB Reads 2020 book Rising: Dispatches from the New American Shore by Elizabeth Rush\, UCSB Library is pleased to sponsor a tour of the North Campus Open Space Restoration Project. \nJoin Lisa Stratton\, Director of Ecosystem Management for UCSB’s Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration (CCBER) for a tour highlighting how restoration of the estuary will support a diversity of birds\, fish\, and wildlife\, absorb flood waters\, and be adaptive to sea level rise. This 100 acre restoration project restores the historic upper arms of Devereux Slough to tidal flow by excavating 350\,000 cubic yards of fill from a golf course created in the wetland in the 1960s.  Come learn how this project models sustainable development concepts and restores diverse native habitats and public trails to the larger Ellwood-Devereux open space.\n\n\nMeet at the North Campus Open Space parking lot at 6969 Whittier Drive\, Goleta (see map below).  Wear comfortable shoes and plan to walk 2 to 2.5 miles.\n\n\nLisa Stratton\, Director of Ecosystem management for CCBER has been spearheading the project with the CCBER team of staff and students. Lisa received her Ph.D. in 1998 and has been working at CCBER since 2005. Her work involves restoring native flora and fauna across our campus which is situated at the interface between the urban environment and valuable wetlands and ocean environments. \n\n\nQuestions: Contact Alex Regan\, Events & Exhibitions Librarian at 805-893-3605 or aregan@ucsb.edu.\n\n\n Meet at the North Campus Open Space parking lot at 6969 Whittier Drive\, Goleta\n

SUMMARY:APOC Hike | Goleta Beach and University
DESCRIPTION:Hikes are typically on the third Saturday of most months. Schedule is subject to change due to weather and other situations. Check website for updates.  \nAmerican Pilgrims on the Camino Visit https://www.santabarbara-pilgrims.org/ for event details. \nSome of the members are officially recorded Pilgrims who have hiked along one or more of the historical Camino Routes in Europe (The Way of St. \n
