About this activity

Our Walking Wednesdays season is kicked off by an examination of State Street’s past to find answers to the issues facing us today.

COAST

“Solving State Street’s Problems with Ideas from the Past” with Anthony Grumbine, Architect and Historic Landmarks Commissioner.

Join architect and Historic Landmarks Commissioner Anthony Grumbine to compare today’s State Street and the surrounding blocks, to what it looked like over the City’s history and how it developed to its current status.  Previous iterations of State Street included elements of urbanism such as multistory buildings, increased density, and even a streetcar.  Participants will consider the following question:  What inspirations from Santa Barbara’s historic roots can be used to create a more vibrant, safe, and economically healthy State Street?

Our walk starts at the entrance of El Paseo on State Street (near 812 State Street, Bryant & Sons Jewelers).
