Geology of Sedgwick | Hiking the Blue Schist Trail

About this activity

After a 15 minute orientation, hikers will drive to the trailhead. The 4+ mile hike is moderate-strenuous with some steep sections. Hiking time is approximately 3.5 hours with elevation gain of 520 feet.

Features of the Fransican formation: Little Pine and Cameusa fault zones; serpentinite, chert, blue schist outcroppings.

Participants need to be in good physical condition with good balance. Carrying plenty of water is required. Sturdy boots, brimmed hat and hiking pole; snacks/lunch are suggested.

ENROLLMENT CAP: 20 adults

Sam Spaulding, a docent and part-time steward of the Reserve, received a degree in Cultural Anthropology from UCSB before working for the Channel Islands National Park Service as an archeologist and wildlife manager.

There is a suggested donation of $20 pp to support the public education program.
